Assar Gabrielsson, Volvo's president and founder, got the idea for the car when he saw a Chevrolet Corvette in the United States and wanted to make something similar. … When Volvo presented an open 2-seater sports car with a body made of fibreglass-reinforced polyester in 1954, it was something of a sensation. However, the car did not go into production until 1956 and, after a great many problems, production was wound up in 1957. By this time, 67 cars had been built.
In two years, only 67 copies of the entire Volvo P1900 Convertible were built, 50 of which have fortunately survived until today. The meticulously designed car

It's a Volvo P1900. During a trip to America in 1953, the co-founder of Volvo was impressed with little roadsters with fiberglass tubs, like the Chevy Corvette. So he talked to the guys at Glasspar in Costa Mesa (a town just a few freeway exits away from the Mercedes Benz Classic Center) and asked them to design and build a body for Volvo.
